What is beID?

beID stands for "Belgian electronic identity": the chip on your Belgian identity card and the software that lets you use it. With your eID and a card reader you can prove your identity online and sign documents with legal validity.

What can you do with your eID?

Log in to government services such as Tax-on-web, My eBox and MyPension.
Activate the itsme app (possible with your eID and a card reader).
Digitally sign documents with legal validity, for example a PDF or a contract.
Confirm your identity on websites that support eID identification: your doctor, your municipality, your insurer.

Which software do you need?

To use your eID on a computer you need three things: the official eID software from the Belgian government (free at eid.belgium.be), a card reader, and — to use your card on regular websites — a bridge between your browser and the card.

What is the beID Helper?

The beID Helper is a small, free program that provides that bridge: supporting websites can read your identity data or request a signature through the helper — always only after you enter your PIN. The helper runs entirely locally on your computer; nothing is sent to a server.

beID, eID or itsme: what's the difference?

eID is the card itself: your electronic identity card. beID is the name commonly used for the card together with its software. itsme is a separate smartphone app you can also use to log in — convenient, but for some uses (such as a qualified signature with your card) the eID itself is still required.
